Performance Max automatically distributes across Google’s entire inventory (Search, Display, YouTube, Discover, Gmail, Maps) from a single campaign feed, delegating most arbitration to the algorithm. Manual control largely disappears — upfront preparation therefore becomes decisive.
Before launching: tracking must be flawless
Performance Max optimizes on the conversion signals you feed it. If tracking is inaccurate or incomplete, the algorithm optimizes toward the wrong objective at scale, which can get expensive fast given this campaign type’s broad distribution.
Prepare asset groups by theme
Even though Performance Max works without classic ad groups, the quality and variety of asset groups provided (headlines, descriptions, images, videos) directly influence performance. Prepare several message and visual variants per product or service theme.
Use audience signals as a starting point
Audience signals don’t restrict targeting like classic targeting does, but they guide the algorithm at campaign launch. Providing relevant audiences (existing customers, site visitors) generally speeds up the learning phase.
Exclude what needs excluding before launch
Brands, geographic zones or content to exclude must be configured before launch, as exclusion options remain more limited than in classic Search once the campaign is live.
Monitor the insights report, not the usual metrics
Performance Max offers less granularity than a classic Search campaign. The insights report (search themes, audience trends) becomes the main window into what’s working, in the absence of a detailed search terms report.
Don’t judge performance too early
Performance Max’s learning phase typically lasts several weeks. Cutting or heavily modifying the campaign before that delay prevents the algorithm from stabilizing its decisions.
